PIMM SYNOPSIS:

Participatory Interactive Media Model (PIMM) entails use of multi - media strategies to conceptualise, develop and disseminate behaviour change intervention messages originated by and for the same community.

PIMM strategies that are personalized, emotionally compelling, rely on role models, and embedded in social and cultural norms and narrative forms (story telling) to bring awareness and behaviour change.

It tailors communication strategies to each region or community's needs, taking into consideration institutional interest, capacity and existing activities.

PIMM allows unhindered and active input of all participants thus making, not only the message, but also the entire process people centred and owned. This way, communities discover their own resources and innovate strategies to face socio-economic challenges from their own perspectives.

A PIMM outreach starts with icebreaking, which involves games, songs and exercises that help participants to relax. This is followed up by presentation of skits that depict dilemmas earlier identified during contact setting and focused group discussions. The skits are used to elicit debates and discussions on the dilemmas leading to options for the same. The options are then captured in templates that are presented for scrutiny, improvement and approval or disapproval before final development and display on murals or other IEC materials.

PIMM, patented by SAP, has been used in HIV/AIDS and health, education, governance, gender equity, corruption, environmental degradation intervention, family planning and advocacy for equality of all peoples.

SAP initiated the first major family planning campaign in Kenya in conjunction with the Family Planning Association of Kenya and the Family Planning Private Sector. In collaboration with the Norwegian Church Aid, SAP initiated the first HIV/AIDS awareness campaign in south Sudan.

SAP implemented environmental conservation intervention programmes for the Kenya Energy and Conservation Organisation (KENGO) and HIV/AIDS intervention projects for AMREF, USAID, Family Health International and Programme for Appropriate Technology in Kenya (PATH) in their AIDSCAP and IMPACT projects.

HIV/AIDS School and community based youth behaviour change intervention program funded by the Global Fund for AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis. Through PIMM we use theatre, murals, debates, essays - writing and talk shows, to develop messages and promote behaviour change among the youth.

About 2,500 schools are involved in the program initially expected to run for two years in Nairobi, Eastern, Coast and Central provinces.
